Piero Muzio Fai 241 | |

.... Carl later said Bill Hughes " too much work " and started to use the Profi . That hand made engines are fine but so expensive ...... He was the fastest US in team selection for the next W.C in Bulgaria in August, do you go there ? I had a long relationship with David Leigh. He won so many Aus. Champs for us with 3,5 , 6,5, 10 and 15cc for many many years ! He was with all family in Milano - Idroscalo for the Worlds Championship in the first '80 years and he and his young son won also. He told me about the UC Speed competitions with OPS ! I think peoples understand us so I will non translate, sorry! Regards. Piero Muzio FAI 241

Thank you Piero, yes Carl Dodge uses a Profi 2005 with his own bits inside now. I agree his engines are too much work, I will make mine a lot less pretty! I really admire the Lerner engine though, really nice! I also like the work of the Late Wayne Trivan. Half A Engine Cannot go to the WC, I still have to work for a living. This is a problem, the Earth is too big! I see you have talked about propellers letting go, we had that happen in a test bench. Flew straight past my right ear as I was adjusting the fuel needle. Your engine ( OPS Redhead 60 on pipe ) turned into a wild animal as one blade stayed attached, went relly well in the model after that. Perhaps I am giving away performance secrets. |

Decisamente stupendo, Dooling. Ciao Ernesto |

I do have some equipment, I'd like a TestBench, unfortunately I don't have milling machine, but maybe a friend can help me. Many thanks. All the best from Sicily, South Italy! Ernesto

| Citazione: Beautiful engine the Dooling 29! Amazingly good castings and machining for the period. The Dooling Brothers built other protoypes which I have seen in a Collector's magazine. Anyone else seen this magazine? I gave my copy away many years ago sadly. Thank you Dooling, it brought back many good memories. Not very powerful though, I think the .29 made about 0.6 BHP @ 18000 rpm? @Ernesto Yes, I was thinking of two aluminium plates about 100mm square and 16mm thick with a 25mm steel bar passing through. The rear plate would have the Torque sensor ( Strain Guages ) and you could just attach it to a cheap Voltmeter plus 9 volt battery. Calibration would be by weights on the day of use. I can make two sets and send you one set gratis? You would then need to make a steel stand with a thick steel plate to bolt the plates on. Rough but simple without much to go wrong! I will draw something up for your comment. This will be the so called "propeller" style which is easier on the valuable engines than the Eddy Current type. You will need to try at least five propellers and then use a "Spline Curve Function" in a Spreadsheet to interpolate a power curve, but I can set that up using "Libre Office" and then send you a copy to play with. Also I will find a photo of the internals of the HS-15 so you can see the differences between it and the Dodge engine. If all goes well I will scan the three articles by David Guirke ( American ) on using a Dyno and post the link somewhere for others to download. @Piero I have got a Norvel 15 Piston and Liner to look at. This is a Russian inovation that uses anodized aluminium fined/liner Teflon coated with a hard nickel plated aluminium piston. I was proposing to replace the piston with something made in bronze ( chrome plated ). Should be good for 45,000 rpm and around 2.75 BHP? I will overcome the weight penalty by using the FMV style piston with plenty of extra holes as well ( air weighs less than metal! ). 29C in Adelaide today with plenty of blue sky! | |

Saluti Piero Muzio FAI 241 | |

David, you open so many discussions...... About the Norvel liner , here in the first discussion "elaboriamo i motori a scoppio" or "model engines modification" I spoke about all the types of liner- cyl-piston ABC - AAC... and many other material ( your translator will work ... ) for piston and cylinder. But now I need to go to sleep 2:52 AM ! Milano to day rain and 10° C Sincerely Piero Muzio FAI 241 |
