I would not use old/used wire, can cause shorts. Go to your local motor transformer/motor rewinder, they have very good quality wire, you'll probably get it for free. Take your motor (plane, equipment?) with you, they love these little motors you can handle without an overhead crane.

You can get the same motor with stella and delta. Say your star motor has 10 winds, it will be the same as a delta motor with 17 winds. For a given number of winds, a delta configuratian will run 1.7-1.8 times faster. Star or delta has no influence on the power/weight ratio, that depends mainly on motor size and surfac.
