Regarding the picolario or Skymelody :
I have owned and used both. My first vario was a Skymelody, simply because at the time ( approx. 2yrs ago) the piolario was not yet available in the U.S.
I later sold it, and got an picolario instead. They both fulfill their primary function, indicating lift/sink, very well, the reason I switched to the picolario was the voltage/altitude voice readout, which at the time, was not available with the Skymelody.
In the mean time, an additional component, the Skypanel is available for the Skymelody, and with that, you also have voltage, altitude, temperature readout, as well as data logger functions. More info about that one here .
If that appeals to you, it would be the way to go, if your primary reason for a vario is finding the lift, you could go either with the Skymelody alone, or with the picolario, but with the picolario you still have altitude and battery voltage readout.
BTW, the voltage readout is a really neat function, it has already saved me one plane, when one of the receiver pack cells died, and the voltage started dropping rapidly. However, with the picolario, which will report everytime the voltage changes 0.1 volt, I had enough warning to bring the plane down safely.

There is a new kid in the block:

wstech has made a "talking" version of their vario which can provide you with the altitude and voltage. (http://www.wstech.de/)
The prices starts with 229€ which makes it one of the cheapest (less than the picolario)

In the basic functionality (vario sensitivity) ithere is no difference to the entablished skymelody and picolario. I have no idea if they also do an english talking verision.

Parere personale. Uso il Picolario da 3 anni. Va veramente bene, non sbagliate di sicuro. !!!

Premesso che a detta di chi li ha sono tutti ottimi prodotti, l'eagletree "Glide" è quello più completo: è un variometro ma anche una telemetria espandibile con molte opzioni (giri, temperature, rx volt, ma anche g-force, ecc) e credo sia l'unica che ha anche il GPS, che è utile sia per trovare un modello perso a valle sia perchè si stanno sempre più sviluppando le gare a percorso basate su "piloni" GPS. A me piace molto come prodotto :wink:

Ho lo Skymelodi con Skypanel e funziona perfettamente. Anche l'assistenza tecnica dell'Ing. U. Schulz è ottima. Non conosco il Picolario e perciò non posso dare giudizi su quale sia il migliore, ma penso si equivalgano.

salve.. ..volevo sapere come si usa il picolario... per quello che ho capito dovrebbe dare attraverso l'audio le informazioni di quota velocità e altro..
....esiste la possibilità di impostare la frequenza con cui viene trasmessa l'informazione? mi spiego se mi informa della quota ogni 20 secondi significa che appenna data l'informazione è attendibile ma trascorsi i dieci secondi potrebbe essere già cambiata la sua quota....
..poi volevo sapere se io volessi sapere la quota poi la velocità come faccio.. potrei pensare che il picolario riesca a dare sempre la stessa informazione come programmato prima del decollo.. poi magari atterrando imposto il picolario di trasmettere la velocità per esempio e dunque nel volo successivo avrò solo la velocità..
..insomma questo è quello che ipotizzo..
..nella realtà come si usa?

Un mio amico ha lo strumento che ricerchi ma non conosco il nome e le caratteristiche;pensa che durante il test ha raggiunto i 330 metri di quota dal pendio di lancio.Conosco però dove è stato acquistato tale strumento:hobbyprofessional di Roma....
